Vertical Installation Print E-mail
Vertical Pump installations are becoming more widely used as they are a guaranteed source of heat and do not interfere with the surrounding garden area once installed.
Issues to consider before installing a vertical installation.

1.    Some local authorities demand a written permit to allow a bedrock heat pump to be installed.
2.    It is slightly more expensive than a horizontal installation.

Vertical boreholes can only be described as specialised. Unlike horizontal installations were a simple 360 degrees excavator can be used.
Vertical holes are:-  a 150mm diameter hole is drilled to approximately 100m below ground level using a down the hole hammer or rock rolling bits (using large industrial drills). As the hole is being drilled the horizons are flushed out using either air or water.

On completion of drilling a "U" bend collector pipe is installed down the hole, then grouted up using a special bentonite / grout formula back to a manifold chamber. Where again it will be piped back to a heat pump. The collector will then be pressure tested, filled and leek tested.
Vertical Heat pump installation into bedrock

When designing a vertical installation you must consider the following.

  • Heat pump size

  • Conductivity of bedrock

  • Drilling techniques

  • Energy extraction from the rock

  • Drilling logs

  • Geo-technical logs

  • Distance between collector pipes

  • Re-charge

  • Service Risk Assessment

  • Possible permits

  • Earth layer depths

  • Filling collectors

  • Testing

  • Sintec take the design problems away for you, to mange a cost affect installation tailored to your needs.
