What Is Geothermal Energy? Print E-mail

Geothermal energy is heat from the ground, generally once under the frost layer the ground remains at a consistent range of between 8 – 13 oC  in temperature.

A geothermal heating system utilises thermal energy from the ground by heating a lower temperature water that is pumped round the bore hole in collector pipes. This is then transferred to a heat pump where it is used to heat up a refrigerant. This heat pump is then used to heat water.  For usage in the home see our heat pump page.

Geothermal energy is not only very efficient offering up to a 400% overall energy saving but it is also one of the most environmentally friendly heating systems as there are zero emissions.
